Steadfast Mindset in a Non-Stop Life
It’s 5:10am. My alarm just went off. I wake up, use the bathroom, brush my teeth, throw on some clothes, do a 5 min meditation and make green tea before I fly out the door. By 6am, I am in a full room of people guiding them through movement and mindful thought reflection coupled with breath work to begin their day. I remind them of their power, their strength, their opportunity to choose the thoughts and things they want to give energy to. I then go home and either take a nap, catch up on computer/admin work, or feed myself. By 9am, I arrive to my next client- usually at a mental health outpatient center. I teach young adults and adolescents gentle movement while giving them a safe space to share what they are navigating to a more neutral/non-therapist party.
At 10:30, I’m generally working out or handling appointments and errands. From 12-4, I’m recording content for an app I work with or creating content for my next retreat and make a smoothie. I get time on my drives to and from clients to listen to podcasts and have phone dates with friends. My evenings are usually filled with at least 2-3 coaching clients or classes at 5, 6, & 7. I get home around 8:30-9 and do my absolute best to snuggle my cat, and create an evening routine that allows my nervous system to slow down and restore for tomorrow’s day; that looks similar to today’s.
Regardless of your job/career set up or schedule, our culture has put immense pressure on achieving and performing and more and more and more and more. I don’t think there is anything wrong with living your best life and working your tail off, especially at a young age; I also think in the midst of this many of us have lost our ability to listen to our inner guidance system of when to pull back, and how to create real self care tactics to ensure longevity and quality of life, especially for our mindset.
My vision and mission has always been so big that it’s overrun my guidance system and left me often running on empty. I want to create the most incredible, unspeakable experiences for myself and my students as we live this life together. I’d love to share how I’ve learned to prioritize a steadfast mindset in the midst of a non-stop life.
First, let’s define steadfast; it’s marked by firm determination or resolution; not shakable. I think it’s important to note here that we are talking about absolute certainty. What that means is even smack in the middle of our hardest working days whether it be travel, non stop calls and meetings, never ending to do lists, we have the ability to be absolutely certain in our why, and know that we also have the resources to recover entirely if we allow our mindset to be open to nourishment.
It’s cliche to feel guilty when we rest, but what we really need to learn to do is just that; rest. Not quit.
Here is what keeps my mind steadfast in the midst of a non-stop life:
-Take deep breaths often: science proves that your breath affects your nervous system and the state of being that your nervous system is affects the way your brain thinks and processes information. Give yourself a 15 second pause and breathe bigger.
-Acknowledge when you’ve taken it too far: be kind and gentle with you, know and learn yourself enough to know when your fuse is too short to be your best self.
-Meditate 5 minutes a day: more if you can. Meditation is like going to the gym for your mind, you better flex that muscle- it's proven to increase your focus and ability to think clearly and make effective grounded decisions. It's like giving yourself superpowers.
-Really appreciate the little things: the first sip of coffee, the moment your body hits the bed, your favorite song...let yourself enjoy.
-Actually rest when you need it: if the timing doesn’t support that, schedule time. We make time for the things that are important.
-Let it go: 99% of the things we worry about don't even matter at the end of the day so do yourself a favor and get really good at zooming in and out of the picture so you can see what's really important for your goals and accomplishments.
-Take a cushion day: I promise, the world will not fall apart if you are OOO one more day, or even a half day, from the work to make sure you feel rested, organized, and prepped.
And always remember, a full life is not a fulfilled life.
